Icons of the 20th century

History records the collective achievement of a people, and of certain individual men and women whose lives and deeds have made a difference in the course of that history.

Across the globe there are names that immediately come to mind as makers of the 20th century: Mahatma Ghandi, Adolf Hitler, Chairman Mao, Lenin, Nehru, Stalin, Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill and many others.

As the century ends, we need to recognise and acknowledge the heroic contributions of illustrious sons and daughters of Africa and of African heritage in the diaspora.

Three great themes must be recalled

1)   the struggle for colonial liberation and redemption of Africa and diasporic peoples;

2)   the courageous individuals who fought for civil rights against unjust authority;

3)   and the explosion of talents in the intellect, arts and sciences that demonstrate the power of black creativity.

Who and why in your view was

  • the greatest African of the 20th Century?
  • the greatest West Indian of the 20th century?
  • the greatest Black American of the 20th century?
