Dream girls get down to business at Cafe Royal

Black women in business from the UK and Europe celebrated their 4th annual meeting in mid-October with a conference, awards dinner and launch of a unique directory of 1,000 black women in business in the UK and Europe.

Sponsored by the European Federation of Black Women Business Owners - EFBWBO, UK members met with delegates from the USA, Egypt, France and the Netherlands.

Prominent and international speakers addressed more than 100 women on vital business topics and issues. Invited speakers included Minister for Small Firms at the Department of Trade and Industry, Patricia Hewitt MP, Leader of the House of Lords and the Minister for Women, Baroness Margaret Jay, and the Head of Human Resources of Coca-Cola, Lydia Dorman.

International speakers included President of the National Federation of Black Women Business Owners Dr Mary Walker who is based in Washington, D.C., and Managing Director of Legato (Holland), Wilma Gillis-Burleson. The conference also featured a series of workshops from McDonalds, Natwest Bank and IBM.

An awards dinner Friday 15th October at the Café Royal, Piccadilly, London honoured twenty European black women in business and industry. Awards presenters included ; (EFBWBO President) Yvonne Thompson, Small Business Bureau's Alan Cleverley OBE, Luster Products' Sharon Cameron and best audio journalist (EMMA 1998 &1999) Henry Bonsu. The event was hosted by presenter and journalist Delia Dolor.

The European Federation of Black Women Business Owners was launched in the UK in October 1996. Its sister organisation, The National Federation of Black Women Business Owners, was created in 1984 in Washington, D.C. by a group of black women business owners to gather corporate contracts on behalf of their members.
